And the rest is politics: How Propertymark amplifies member voices

To represent Propertymark members’ views and the property sector to ensure their voices are heard, we interpret key policy developments and lobby for change. Working with members, we research and survey to develop evidence-based arguments to campaign for policy change across the devolved nations on issues, including supply of property, tenancy management, economic crime, property taxation, enforcement, material information, and welfare reform.

By representing our  members, we facilitate constructive dialogue and collaboration to shape the property landscape.

Consultations

Responding to public consultations organised by the UK and devolved governments, or parliamentary committees is one way we represent members.

Our Policy and Campaigns Team have submitted 27 consultation responses so far in 2024 on topics including best practices on rent-to-rent, economic crime, planning reform, and ways to improve the home buying and selling process.

Policy Position Papers

Presenting changes we would like to see in the industry through our position papers to help shape future legislation is a mechanism to influence policymakers and stakeholders. We provide detailed examinations of the key issues impacting property agents, presenting our recommendations thorough research, industry insights, and expert analysis.

Our latest publication, A Dickensian legal process, draws on data from our monthly Housing Insight Reports to investigate the causes of longer property transactions.

Member representation: Consultation responses and position papers

We respond to public consultations organised by the government, or a parliamentary committee, to make our members' views clear on proposed legislation or the effects of existing policy.

Party conferences and in-person meetings

Each year, Propertymark attends the national conferences of the main political parties where we meet with politicians and share key research on the housing sector.

We follow this up throughout the year with individual meetings with Ministers and officials to push forward particular pieces of work or discuss challenges the sector faces.

Commons select committees

Propertymark regularly gives evidence to select committees, who carry out much of the work of the House of Commons. There is a Commons select committee for each UK Government department, and they are also set up to look at specific pieces of legislation.

These committees examine the issues in detail, scrutinise government work and expenditure, and consider proposals for primary and secondary legislation.

All Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs)

Our work with APPGs is also invaluable. APPGs are informal cross-party groups, run by Members of the Commons and Lords, and focus on specific topics. They are not official bodies, but follow rules and a code of conduct set out by parliament. Joining an APPG indicates an MP has a significant interest in the group’s chosen subject, which makes them helpful allies for campaigning.

We engage with APPGs by giving in-person evidence to inquiries, responding to consultations, and attending events.
