Spring Statement reinforces housing as an economic keystone
Chancellor Rachel Reeves has delivered her Spring Statement, outlining the UK Government’s plans for housing, planning, and welfare benefits as part of its broader economic strategy. The Statement was framed as a continuation of the government's existing strategy rather than a full Budget, with no major tax changes and only a limited number of new policies aimed at correcting a gap in public finances.
Permitted development changes aim to boost housing potential
The UK Government has opened a consultation which proposes amendments to permitted development rights that remove barriers to the installation of air-source heat pumps and charging points for electric vehicles. Changes to the rules on altering and extending properties are also put forward to ensure they provide flexibility for householders as well as change of use is encouraged to turn derelict and under-used buildings into new homes.
One million outstanding homes remain unbuilt
