Propertymark agent could have saved MP from rental flats scandal

Jas Athwal, MP, has endured a weekend of backlash after reports revealed his tenants were living in flats containing black mould and an infestation of ants. It was also discovered that Mr Athwal, previously the leader of Redbridge Council who introduced the scheme, had not correctly renewed the selective licences for his properties.

Stating the properties were managed by a letting agent, Athwal was shocked to learn of the problems residents had experienced, and tenants living in the 15 properties can now expect a personal apology and reimbursement for repairs they’ve had to pay for.

Peace of mind with a Propertymark Protected agent

The importance of choosing a professionally regulated, qualified letting agent, which all Propertymark members are, could have spared Athwal this embarrassment.

Using a Propertymark Protected agent mitigates the chance of issues arising. Landlords can feel confident that their agent is part of a professional body designed to meet high standards and service, and tenants can relax, knowing that their tenancy will run smoothly—allowing them to enjoy their home.

Membership represents commitment to excellence

With no mandatory regulation of the property sector, Propertymark requires members to adhere to a Code of Conduct and regulate their company voluntarily when they join us.

This allows them to demonstrate their commitment to best practices and evidence that they work to a higher standard than the law demands. Any agent who falls below Propertymark’s standards is subject to disciplinary action.

Banishing dampness and mould needs proactive professionals

A key role for qualified property agents

Propertymark has reached out to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Angela Rayner MP, asking for clarity to extend Awaab’s Law to the private rented sector (PRS) and to promote the value that agents have in ensuring consumers are protected, driving up standards, and stamping out bad practice.

We support greater regulation of the PRS and the wider housing sector and, believe that consumers should receive a professional service from a qualified property agent, whether buying or selling a home or property or renting. Mandatory qualifications should sit alongside a statutory code of practice, registration and a licence to operate.
