Welsh Government announces highest-ever investment in flood protection

The £77 million investment in flood protection for 2025-26, is aimed at safeguarding communities from the increasing threat of climate change. Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies MS unveiled the plans in the Senedd, emphasising that the funding comes at a crucial time following severe storms that affected hundreds of properties across Wales.

Thousands of properties to benefit from new and existing schemes

The latest investment will support new flood protection schemes designed to benefit 4,640 properties 11,000 homes and businesses that are already set to be protected by projects due to be completed in 2025.

The record funding builds on two consecutive years of investment exceeding £75 million and is part of a broader effort to reduce flood risk to over 45,000 properties as the government accelerates its climate resilience strategy.

Targeted investment across Wales

A significant portion of the Welsh Government’s funding will be directed to Natural Resources Wales and local authorities, enabling flood alleviation projects in areas including Bontnewydd in Gwynedd, Pentre in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Gurnos in Powys, and Haven Head in Pembrokeshire. In addition, 23 natural flood management projects will be rolled out, using nature-based solutions to protect nearly 2,800 properties.

Urgent action to address the impact of climate change

The Deputy First Minister reinforced the urgency of the investment, citing the impact of Storms Bert and Darragh, which affected more than 700 properties and how, the government is committed to long-term planning and emergency response, to ensure communities are protected from increasingly frequent and severe weather events.
